Three Kinds of Faith:
Verses 11 – 15
Discussion Themes:
-
TYPES OF WORSHIP: For some people worship and prayers are reduced to a bargaining exercise with the Gods. Promising to be good, they pray to pass that exam, to get that job, to win that heart, to gain that wealth.
A legendary prayer, dripping in calculation, requests God to bless us that they we may ‘eat well from golden plates with our grandchildren’. Eating well means that into their old age they have good health. Grandchildren mean their children are happily married, that the family lineage continues, and the gold plates ensure there is prosperity, too! Then again, some make a great show of their piety through pompous, public displays of their worship. The superior form of worship, the Gita declares, is that which is performed seeking nothing more than peace and devotion.
-
GOOD SPEECH: How careful we must be when we speak. Words are powerful. Our words can live on in the minds and emotions of our family, friends and workmates. The quality – and quantity too – of our words reveal to others what type of mind and personality we have. The Gita advocates that we should only speak what is true, but avoid speaking a harsh truth. Often silence is better than speech!

Bhagavad Gita:
We’re exploring a spiritual classic that’s enriched cultures throughout Asia over the centuries and inspired leading figures in modern times from Mohandas Gandhi, Albert Einstein, Carl Jung, and Aldous Huxley to astronaut Sunita Williams who took a copy of the Bhagavad Gita to the international space station.
We’re dipping into Swami Ranganathananda’s 3 volume commentary: Universal Message of the Bhagavad Gita. The late President of the Ramakrishna Order, the Swami was a world thinker and cultural ambassador for India, sponsored by the Government to travel to over 50 countries around the world giving lectures.
