It is only because of ignorance that the Self appears to be finite. When ignorance is destroyed, The Self … truly reveals Itself by Itself, like the sun when the cloud is removed.

Atmabodha:

SRI SHANKARACHARYA, a child prodigy and religious reformer, was the greatest propagator of Advaita Vedanta (non-dual philosophy). A prolific writer, his voluminous works are categorized into three groups: commentaries (Bhasyas), Treatises (Prakaranas), and Hymns (Stotras).

Atmabodha, belonging to the treatises group and consisting of just 68 verses, provides a simple and beautiful exposition of Shankaracharya’s lofty philosophy.

The Upanishads stipulate that to attain spiritual illumination, an aspirant needs to cultivate three qualities:

1. To listen with full and devoted attention to their spiritual teacher (sravana)
2. To reason and to tease out the pros and cons of the spiritual teachings (manana)
3. To reach the heights of meditation (nididhyasana)

The study of such works plays a vital role in our spiritual life.
