The Four Yogas
“Each Soul is potentially divine. The goal is to manifest this Divinity within by controlling nature, external and internal. Do this either by work, or worship, or psychic control, or philosophy – by one or more, or all of these – and be free. This is the whole of religion. Doctrines, or dogmas, or rituals, or books, or temples, or forms, are but secondary details.”
Swami Vivekananda
“The Jiva [individual soul] in its true nature is Sat-Chit-Ananda [Existence, Knowledge, Bliss]; Siva Himself, because of the ego it suffers. When the ego dies all troubles end.”
Sri Ramakrishna
IN the spiritual life, ‘I’ and ‘mine’ are the only obstacles for the attainment of knowledge and freedom. However, nature has endowed us humans with extraordinary capacities, making diligent use of which, we can overcome these hurdles. Sadhanas, or spiritual practices, or yoga, all ultimately lead to the pinnacle of human evolution – spiritual illumination.
Spiritual paths are innumerable, but they can be reduced to just four based on the faculties we possess:
- Through self-control and meditation: Raja Yoga
- Through self-sacrifice and service: Karma Yoga
- Through self-surrender and love: Bhakti Yoga
- Through self-analysis and reason: Jnana Yoga
