SUMMARY:Yoga Sutras - Monthly Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:Yoga Sutras\nA Monthly Lecture Series\n  \nTalk By Pravrajika Gayatriprana & Guided Meditation\nZoom link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/88434388900 \n \nAt Vedanta Hall  (open from 10.30 am for Meditation) \nIn this Talk:\nIn this Talk: \nConcept of God in Yoga \nPATANJALI accepts there are several paths to attaining liberation; concentration is not the only path. In this talk we reach a point in the Yoga Sutras where Patanjali introduces the idea of God. \nBrahman (God) in Vedanta is without any name\, form or attributes and hence cannot create or destroy the universe. \nIswara or the personified God is Brahman manifest within Prakriti (nature) and is the creator\, sustainer and dissolver of the universe. \nOne’s concept of God depends on where one has reached in one’s spiritual evolution. The idea of God for devotees ranges from that of a judge meting out rewards and punishments to an all-pervading\, unchanging\, imperishable eternal existence. \n  \nGuided Meditation: Expand your Consciousness \nIn this guided Meditation we follow an ancient Yogic Technique expanding our sense of self beyond the limits of our body and mind\, embracing the whole universe. It also aims to develop a sense of spaciousness\, peace and of unity with all things.

SUMMARY:Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna - Monthly Talk
DESCRIPTION:Talk from 11 am  (10.30 am: Vedanta Hall open for Meditation) \nTalk by Pravrajika Sridharaprana\nIntroduction by Pravrajika Nityatmaprana\n& Guided Meditation\nNOTE: No Zoom Session Available for this Talk\nIn this Talk:\nChapter 44\nThe Master on Himself and His Experiences\nSeptember 2\, 1885\n  \nMASTER: [SRI RAMAKRISHNA]: “When a thorn enters the sole of your foot you have to get another thorn. You then remove the first thorn with the help of the second Afterwards you throwaway both. Likewise\, after removing the thorn of ignorance with the help of the thorn of knowledge\, you should throwaway the thorns of both knowledge and ignorance. \n“There are signs of Perfect Knowledge. One is that reasoning comes to an end. As I have just said\, the butter sizzles and crackles as long as it is not thoroughly boiled.” \nDoctor: “But can one retain Perfect Knowledge permanently? You say that all is God. Then why have you taken up this profession of a paramahamsa? And why do these people attend on you? Why don’t you keep silent?” \nMASTER (smiling): “Water is water whether it is still or moves or breaks into waves. \nThe story of the “Māhut Narayana” \n“I must tell you something else. Why should I not listen to the ‘mahut Narayana’? The guru had taught his disciple that everything was Narayana. A mad elephant was coming toward the disciple\, but he did not move away since he believed the guru’s words. He thought that the elephant was Narayana. The mahut shouted to him: ‘Get away! Get away!’ But the disciple did not move. The elephant picked him up and threw him to the ground. The disciple was not quite dead; when his face was sprinkled with water he regained consciousness. Being asked why he had not moved away\, he said: ‘why should I? The guru said\, “Everything is Narayana.”‘ ‘But\, my child\,’ said the Guru\, ‘Why didn’t you listen to the words of the mahut Narayana?’ \n“It is God who dwells within as the Pure Mind and Pure Intelligence. I am the machine and He is its Operator. I am the house and He is the Indweller. It is God who is the mahut Narayana.” \nFrom Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna \n  \nThe Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna: \nThe conversations  between Sri Ramakrishna\, the 19th-century mystic and promoter of interfaith  understanding\, and the brilliant\, questioning minds of Calcutta. In Sri  Ramakrishna\, they came face-to-face with a type of Spirituality and mystical  states they had only read about. Translated from Bengali by Swami Nikhilananda  with the literary help of Margaret Woodrow Wilson\, daughter of President  Woodrow Wilson and Joseph Campbell\, foreword by Aldous Huxley. \n  \nGuided Meditation: Imagine \n Reflecting on Sri Ramakrishna’s Teachings and connecting with your favourite form of God.

SUMMARY:Bhagavad Gita Class/ Discussion
DESCRIPTION:From 7 pm at Vedanta Hall for Meditation\nOR From 7.30 pm join via    ZOOM (Link)\n\nGroup discussion led by Pravrajika Sridharaprana\, a senior nun of Sri Sarada Math of the Ramakrishna Order. \nStudy of Chapter 17 Continues: Three Kinds of Faith:Verses 8 – 10\nDiscussion Themes:  \n\n\nTHE THREE TYPES OF FOOD: To live a more spiritual life\, we are encouraged to pay attention to what we take in. The sounds and images we experience\, the words we read\, and the people we spend time with all shape our thoughts\, emotions\, and the energy we give off. \n\n\nWHILE BEING alert to all these\, we should also be aware of the quality of the food we consume. In our younger years\, with roaring digestion and boundless energy and appetite\, we’re more interested in quantity than quality of food entering our mouths. But as we mature\, physically and spiritually\, we’re compelled to seek out food that sustains our physical health. In verses 8-10 of chapter 17 of the Gita\, food quality is classified according to the three Gunas. Sattva: Purity\, Rajas: Passion\, Tamas: Inertia. \n\n\nSATTVIC FOOD: the purest food ‘augments vitality\, energy\, strength\, health and cheerfulness ‘. Rajasic foods are ‘bitter\, sour\, saline\, excessively hot\, pungent\, dry\, and burning’. Tamasic foods are ‘stale\, tasteless\, stinking\, cooked overnight\, refuse\, and impure’. \n\n\nTHE BASIC RULES for eating wholesome Sattvic food are simple and can benefit everyone. By choosing fresh\, unprocessed foods and staying active\, we can build a healthy mind and body to handle whatever life brings. \n\n\nSLOW FOOD MOVEMENT: Another option is to join the ‘slow food movement’\, started by Carlo Petrini in Italy in 1986. This movement stands against fast food and a rushed lifestyle. It supports healthy\, seasonal food produced cleanly\, fair prices for growers\, the preservation of food traditions and farming methods\, and local businesses. \n\n\nLearn more in the Discussion \nBhagavad Gita: \nWe’re exploring a spiritual classic that’s enriched cultures throughout Asia over the centuries and inspired leading figures in modern times from Mohandas Gandhi\, Albert Einstein\, Carl Jung\, and Aldous Huxley to astronaut Sunita Williams who took a copy of the Bhagavad Gita to the international space station. \nWe’re dipping into Swami Ranganathananda’s 3 volume commentary: Universal Message of the Bhagavad Gita. The late President of the Ramakrishna Order\, the Swami was a world thinker and cultural ambassador for India\, sponsored by the Government to travel to over 50 countries around the world giving lectures.
