That is: we don’t want to admit that there are problems and issues\, and that we don’t necessarily all have a fair go\, which is the Australian ethos\,” he says. “Strength comes from having honest conversations about how we can do better… Let’s say: if we recognise racism\, we can recognise how to be better. Let’s learn\, let’s be curious\, let’s find out more about those who might look or seem different\, and we can be a stronger\, richer fabric.” \nWe also look forward to hearing from our other guest speakers\, Prof Desmond Cahill\, Jason Yat-Sen Li M.P.\, and Cr. In these talks the Swami explored and dissected Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount to highlight its profound meaning and close connection with eastern philosophy. \n \nFrom 1930 to his passing in 1976\, Swami Prabhavananda was in charge of the Vedanta Society of Southern California’s main Centre in Hollywood. His talks and personality attracted those sincerely seeking a spiritual path\, including writers\, actors and other creatives. \nDiscussion Themes:\n\nMULTITUDES & DISCIPLES – ‘Religion is something which can actually be transmitted. A truly illumined teacher can transmit to us the power which unfolds the divine consciousness latent within us. But the field must be fertile and the soil ready before the seed can be sown.’\nBLESSED ARE THE POOR IN SPIRIT – To be receptive to the higher teachings we must be poor in spirit; in other words\, we must be humble.\nBLESSED MOURNING – Many mourn the loss of wealth and pleasure\, but a rare few mourn a greater loss: their unfulfilled desire to realize ‘the truth of God.’\nBLESSED ARE THE MEEK – ‘What … is meekness? It is to live in self-surrender to God\, free from the sense of “me” and “mine.” This does not mean that we should get rid of wealth\, family\, and friends; but we should get rid of the idea that they belong to us. They belong to God.’\nTHIRST FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS – If we analyze ourselves\, we shall find that our interest in God is not nearly as strong as our interest in all kinds of worldly objects. But even a slight desire to know the divine Reality is a beginning that can lead us higher. We must start with self-effort\nGOD-LIKE MERCY – To be merciful is one of the conditions necessary before we can receive the truth of God. Envy\, jealousy\, hatred—these are some of the universal weaknesses inborn in man. They are linked with our ego-sense which stems from ignorance. How are we to overcome them? When ignorance is destroyed\, The Self … truly reveals Itself by Itself\, like the sun when the cloud is removed.\nV.4 Atmabodha \nNew monthly lecture series\nPresented by Pravrajika Sridharaprana\n11 am to 12.30 pm  – Including Talk and Q & A session. \n  \nTopics to be announced\nAtmabodha:\nSRI SHANKARACHARYA\, a child prodigy and religious reformer\, was the greatest propagator of Advaita Vedanta (non-dual philosophy). A prolific writer\, his voluminous works are categorized into three groups: commentaries (Bhasyas)\, Treatises (Prakaranas)\, and Hymns (Stotras). \nAtmabodha\, belonging to the treatises group and consisting of just 68 verses\, provides a simple and beautiful exposition of Shankaracharya’s lofty philosophy. \nThe Upanishads stipulate that to attain spiritual illumination\, an aspirant needs to cultivate three qualities: \n\nTo listen with full and devoted attention to their spiritual teacher (sravana)\nTo reason and to tease out the pros and cons of the spiritual teachings (manana)\nTo reach the heights of meditation (nididhyasana)\n\nThe study of such works plays a vital role in our spiritual life.

Their wisdom was recorded in the Upanishads\, the philosophical and religious texts of Hinduism. \n“In the whole world\, there is no study so beneficial and elevating as that of the Upanishads. This is the title of the latest book by bestselling author Maggie Hamilton. In a special event at Vedanta Hall\, she’ll be interviewed by Author\, Blogger\, and popular speaker\, Walter Mason. Together they will explore a troubling trend arising in many Societies in recent decades. \nIn the post-war boom\, countless millions are blessed with unprecedented opportunities\, comforts and labour-saving devices. With this rising affluence and convenience\, there are also rising expectations\, demands\, and neediness giving rise to the ‘Kidult’ – adults failing to grow into mature adulthood. \nWhat happens when society is run and children are raised\, by immature adults? We see the results of this every day. Maggie and Walter will examine this phenomenon\, how to recognize any ‘Kidultness’ in us\, and how to deal with it. \nAt the same time\, we shouldn’t lose the carefree sense of wonder\, curiosity and optimism of our younger years. In other words\, breaking through selfishness in all its forms helps clear the way to the highest realisations.Swami Sarvagatananda\, in his commentary on the Yoga Sutras describes the five types of selfishness: \n\nAbsolute selfishness\, narrow-mindedness. They are those who are attached to themselves\, they don’t even care for the family.\nThose who are attached to their families\, who have no room for society; me and my family\, my children. They don’t even care for the neighbours.\nThose who serve the national and social needs\, they extend beyond the family.\nThose who care for the international field\, it’s a costly field\, they are very generous; not only our country\, the world itself; … we have to share with our neighbouring countries.\nThose who renounce everything and are proud of their renunciation. … “See how great a renunciation we have made\,” all boast of their renunciation\, and the ego swells with this concept of renunciation. DESCRIPTION:PROGRAM: Vedic Chanting\, Live Devotional Music & Songs\, Talks by Dr Uma Srinivasan &  Pravrajika Gayatriprana.Due to COVID 19 restrictions numbers limited to 25Actual Birthday on Tuesday 5 January\, celebrated at Sarada Tapovan from 6.30 pm with Arati\, Silent Meditation and reading by Pravrajika Gayatriprana.Bring some sweets or savouries to share. \n\n\n\n\nWHEN Sri Sarada Devi first came to Sri Ramakrishna at Dakshineswar at the age of 18\, he asked her a pertinent question: “Have you come to drag me into the worldly life?” Without a moment’s hesitation came her reply: “Why should I drag you into the world? I am here to help you realize your spiritual ideal.”Later\, towards the end of his life\, Sri Ramakrishna one day told Holy Mother: “Look at the people of Calcutta; they are squirming in darkness. You must bring light to them. This is not my burden alone. You too shall have to share it.”Sarada Devi was an equal partner in Sri Ramakrishna’s Mission and a guiding power behind the early days of the Ramakrishna Movement.
